Change in Hyndburn bulky waste collections
POPs (Persistent Organic Pollutants) fire-retardant in domestic seating
Due to a legislation change from 1 January 2023, Hyndburn Borough Council will be collecting and disposing of some bulky waste, such as sofas and chairs, separately to other bulky waste, such as mattresses.
This change is due to waste items that contain POPs (Persistent Organic Pollutants) now needing to be incinerated, rather than taken to landfill. The fire retardant (POP) is found in all upholstered furniture such as sofas and chairs etc. These legislation changes have been made by the Environment Agency and DEFRA to reduce pollution.
Cllr Steven Smithson, portfolio holder for environment at Hyndburn Borough Council, said:
“I am pleased to say that officers at Hyndburn Council have acted quickly after this news of a change in legislation and we will continue to operate our bulky waste collection, which I know is a service residents really value. The change will mean that items containing POP’s will potentially be collected on a different day to other bulky waste items and we anticipate this to be a weekly service.
“The plans we have in place will mean minimal disruption to the usual service. We would like to make sure people are aware this may mean not all items are collected on the same day, even if multiple items are part of the same bulk waste request.”
Lancashire County Council have confirmed the new disposal route for waste items containing POPs and Hyndburn Borough Council have incorporated this into their service. This change in legislation also means that domestic seating, such as sofas and chairs, can no longer be disposed of at Whinney Hill landfill site in Hyndburn from 1 January 2023.
There is no change to the way Hyndburn residents are required to request a bulky waste collection from the Council.
