“Oyez, oyez, oyez!”: Hyndburn’s Coronation Town Cry to be Used Nationally

Published by: , on:

Kicking off a weekend packed with free Coronation events and activities taking place across the Borough, Great Harwood Town Crier Rawden Kerr will be crying in the celebrations with an extra-special Cry written especially for the historic occasion.

The Cry for the King will be performed by Mr Kerr at several places across Hyndburn during the celebrations, including in front of Accrington Town Hall at 2:00pm on Saturday 6 May 2023. Written by Mr Kerr specifically for the special occasion, this Cry for the King has excitingly been adopted by the Loyal Company of Town Criers (one of two major Town Crier associations within the UK), meaning it will be heard around the country over the weekend.

Rawden Kerr, Great Harwood Town Crier, said:

“I am exceptionally proud that our Cry will be taken up around the UK as part of the upcoming Coronation celebrations. Having the opportunity to Cry in a royal Coronation is such a once in a generation privilege and I look forward to joining the people of Hyndburn in celebrating this momentous occasion.”

Town cries have a long tradition within local areas, dating back as early within Hyndburn as 1338 when Adam Nowell was awarded charter rights for Great Harwood. Traditionally, the Town Crier would begin their Cry accompanied by the ringing of a large hand bell to attract attention to their announcement. Mr Kerr continues to uphold this grand tradition today, making public pronouncements as required at ceremonials, fetes, and local events.

This historic cry can be heard in-person on Accrington Town Square on the 6 May as part of an exciting programme of free Coronation events and activities being held across the Borough. From a golden bus offering free transport across Hyndburn to and from events, a live screening of the Coronation procession at Accrington Town Hall, and so much more, this weekend promises to be jam-packed with family-friendly fun that is suitable for all ages.
