Children invited to design Town Square boards
Children are invited to Haworth Art Gallery this half-term to help create a centrepiece for Accrington Town Square
Children aged 4 to 12 are invited get involved and to bring their very best arts and crafts skills to help create designs for temporary fences that will take centre stage on Accrington Town Square.
The temporary fences (hoardings) will be installed around Accrington Market Hall whilst it undergoes construction works in 2024, adding colour and excitement during the transformation.
The free-to-attend workshops will be delivered this half-term by local artist, Jessica Jayne, who will help children create vibrant designs inspired by local history and heritage.
Parents can bring their children along to the upcoming drop-in sessions at Haworth Art Gallery on the following days this coming half term.
- Thursday 26 October 12:30pm to 3:00pm
- Friday 27 October 12:30pm to 3:00pm
- Sunday 29 October 12:30pm to 3:00pm
There is no need to book and everyone is welcome, all materials and guidance will be provided.
Cllr Mohammed Younis, Portfolio Holder for Levelling Up, said:
“We are so pleased here at Hyndburn Council to be able to partner with Haworth Art Gallery on this project, helping us to support the cultural enrichment of the borough at large whilst helping us to involve the youngest members of Hyndburn in the ongoing Town Centre Investment Plan. The changes that are coming to our borough are for everyone, so naturally everyone is invited to take part.”
Using the Haworth’s collection of Broadoak Printworks woodblocks to create vibrant designs that reflect Tiffany Glass and the history of printed cotton within Hyndburn, the children will have the chance to work with local artist Jessica (of Jessica Jayne Designs, a print-making specialist based at The Artist Studios at Haworth Art Gallery) during a series of free printing workshops over the upcoming half term.
The final artwork will be used on hoardings around Accrington Town Square whilst construction works are being carried out on the three Town Centre Investment Plan buildings: Accrington Market, Burton’s Chambers, and Market Chambers. The hoardings will create a bright and welcoming vision throughout the town centre whilst these transformative plans are underway.
The children who participate will also be able to print their unique design onto smaller pieces of paper, a to take a part of their artwork home as a keepsake.
