Leader’s Viewpoint: Councillor Munsif Dad

I’d like to start this week by welcoming our new MP for Hyndburn, Sarah Smith. We extend our warmest congratulations to Sarah and look forward to working together for the benefit of all our residents.

This week saw the Council receive some fantastic news. Our parks and green spaces have flourished, earning 11 Green Flag Awards. Ten previous winners have retained their award, and this year we added Memorial Park in Great Harwood onto the list.

Green Flag recognises and rewards well-managed parks and green spaces, setting the benchmark standard for the management of green spaces across the United Kingdom and around the world.  Milnshaw Park, Oakhill Park, Peel Park, Rhyddings Park, Gatty Park, Cutwood Park, Lowerfold Park, Mercer Park, Wilsons and Woodlands, Accrington Cemetery and Crematorium and now Memorial Park have all received this prestigious honour.

We owe a debt of gratitude to the dedicated park staff and many voluntary and Friends Of Parks groups who maintain these essential spaces. Their tireless efforts ensure that our residents have priceless places to relax, exercise, and enjoy nature.

Work continues on Accrington Town Square, which residents will have noticed as the scaffolding has begun to emerge outside the Market Hall. We have now had several meetings with lead Council officers and consultants regarding the Market Hall, where we had the opportunity to express our thoughts to the project team. Having seen the detailed plans and had in-depth discussions, we now believe the best way to deliver a Market Hall which the residents can be proud of, is for the plans to include a mix of traditional retail alongside an enhanced food and beverage offer.  The Market Hall redevelopment is a fantastic opportunity to breathe new life into our town centre and we are pleased to support this project.

In our commitment to progress, at last weeks’ Council meeting I announced that the Council will conduct a comprehensive review of our corporate strategy. We will assess our goals, aligning them with the evolving needs of our community. This strategic evaluation aims to ensure the most important issues for the residents of Hyndburn are at the forefront of what the Council does.

Our community’s housing landscape is evolving, and we recognise the importance of robust planning policies. We will conduct a thorough review of regulations related to Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMOs). Balancing housing needs, neighbourhood character, and safety remains our priority. Your insights and feedback are invaluable as we refine these policies to create a harmonious living environment for all.

Finally, Hyndburn has seen a fantastic start to our summer event programme, and we are getting closer to the big one! Get ready for OAK FEST, a celebration of music, art, and community spirit! Headlining the event is the talented singer-songwriter Kate Nash. Tickets are still available https://www.skiddle.com/festivals/oak-fest/

This promises to be a memorable gathering at the beautiful Oak Hill Park. Let’s come together, enjoy the rhythm, and create lasting memories. See you at OAK FEST!

Thank you for reading, and let’s continue building a vibrant and united Hyndburn!
