Climate Change the path to Net Zero

What have we accomplished so far?

With a combination of grants and budgets, including the climate reserve funding pot, the council is pleased to list the following accomplishments:

  • In 2020, 2021 and 2022, the Council was awarded the One Carbon World Carbon Neutral Gold Standard.
  • By securing £2.3 million investment from the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme together with capital investment, the Council has successfully decarbonised the three highest emitting buildings: Scaitcliffe House (Co2 emissions by 67%), Hyndburn Leisure Centre (by 71%) and the Cemetery (by 10%).
  • Procured 100% renewable green energy contracts
  • Converted 54 council vehicles (including bin lorries) from diesel fuel to Hydro-treated vegetable oil (HVO). The change will see up to a 90% reduction in Co2 emissions from the vehicle’s, meaning cleaner air for the local community and a smaller carbon footprint for the council
  • Established a Scrutiny Green Review, a Climate Net Zero Working Group and part of a Lancashire-wide climate officers working group to understand best practice and learn from other authorities
  • The Council acquired a green site, known locally as Bury Meadows, at the end of 2022 to tackle and achieve radical climate changes by improving biodiversity, habitat recovery and carbon capture throughout the site
  • Planted 4,000 trees across 16 sites and at 10 schools – including creation of microwoodlands, tree avenues, oak guilds, fruit trees, blossom and berries in a community led project, with thanks to local volunteers, families, schools, cadets supported by PROSPECTS Foundation and Woody (Hyndburn) CIC.
