As part of the new ‘Leader’s Budget’ for 2023/24, £1,000 has been granted by Hyndburn Council to St Andrew’s Primary School in Oswaldtwistle, to help with the expense of their annual nativity play.

The funding will be used to transport the children to Accrington Town Hall for their Christmas play productions this month, where families are invited to come and watch.

Mrs. Tina Wilkinson, Headteacher at St Andrew’s CE Primary School in Oswaldtwistle, said:

“I have been at this school 23 years and we used to all fit in the hall, but since I started here we have trebled in size! So that children could have more than one person attending in the audience we did move to the civic theatre for the production but with that closed we didn’t have a space.

“We have very kindly been offered the Town Hall ballroom for use from the Mayor of Hyndburn, Cllr Terry Hurn, but then we did have difficulty with transporting the children there. After approaching Cllr Peter Britcliffe about the leader’s budget we were awarded this grant to help which is great news.”

Cllr Peter Britcliffe, Acting Leader at Hyndburn Council, said:

“The school are putting on four performances of their annual production this year and all the children seem really excited which is wonderful.  I am really pleased we could help the school and I hope all the families and children have a fantastic time.

“Re-opening the Civic Arts Centre for the community is one of our top priorities and I look forward to sharing news of the progress we have made in the coming months. Residents have been very clear that they want the facility to remain a hub for arts and theatre, that is sustainable for the future, and that is exactly what we will deliver for them.”
