Works are well underway on an eco-friendly upgrade of the Accrington Cemetery and Crematorium depot

The current depot facilities at the Burnley Road site are more than 40 years old and in need of modernisation. The revamp involves the demolition of outmoded welfare facilities, garage structures and fencing. They are being replaced with a new, more energy efficient depot.

The new building will have electric charging points ready for the Council to use electric vehicles and machinery. Security will be enhanced, with new fencing and new storage for equipment.

An extension to the back of the Crematorium will also provide a place for ministers and celebrants to change and refurbish the Crematorium office facilities will also take place.

The improvements will enable cemetery staff to continue to provide an important frontline service but with an eye to the future and running the service in a more carbon neutral way.

Cllr Smithson, Portfolio holder at Hyndburn Council, said:

“It is really exciting to see the new eco-friendly buildings starting to take shape at the Burnley Road Cemetery. The much-needed modernisation and improvement of the facilities will be warmly welcomed by our Cemetery and Crematorium staff, as well as enabling the Borough to meet its important energy efficiency targets.”

Energy efficiency and sustainability of the building stock is key to the Council hitting its target to be net carbon-zero by 2030.
