Notifying a Death – Tell Us Once

Tell Us Once is a service that lets you report a death to most government organisations and council departments in one go.

This means you won’t need to get in touch with individual organisations or send copies of death certificates to notify them of a death – Tell Us Once will do it all for you.

A registrar will explain the Tell Us Once service when you register the death. They will either:

  • complete the Tell Us Once service with you
  • give you a unique reference number so you can use the service yourself online or by phone

For the current timescales for using the service please see the Gov.uk website using the link below.

They can notify services such as the Department for Work and Pensions, HM Revenue and Customs and the Passport Office, as well as the following council services:

  • Council Tax
  • Electoral Services
  • Housing Benefit
  • Council Tax support

See GOV.UK for services included in ‘Tell Us Once’, the details you’ll need before using the service, details about what to do if there is an inquest and also if you want to use the “Tell Us Once” service.

If you have registered a death and opted to use the ‘Tell Us Once’ service, log in using the unique reference number the registrar has given you. For the current timescales for using the service please see the Gov.uk website using the link below.
