Tree Pests and Diseases

Trees owned by the council are inspected as there is a duty of care on the council to ensure that all trees are, as far as reasonably possible, safe.

Trees like all living things are prone to attacks from pests and diseases. Different diseases affect different types of trees. Examples include:

  • Dutch Elm Disease
  • Phytophthora root diseases
  • Phytophthora bleeding canker
  • Pseudomonas
  • Fire blight

The health of trees with diseases will be monitored and in extreme cases it maybe necessary to fell a diseased tree. Each tree will be assessed on an individual basis and the felling of a diseased tree is considered a last resort.
