History of the Woodlands and Wilson Playing Fields

The Woodlands at Clayton-le-Moors was part of the Clayton Hall estate, which was split up and sold off by auction in 1925.

The sale particulars of the estate describe the ‘Pleasure Grounds’ in which the Hall stood as consisting of ‘charming secluded walks through natural and old English gardens with winding paths, intersecting lawns, which, together with well-formed shrubberies, kitchen gardens well planted with fruit trees, and the woodland, add grandeur and beauty to the surroundings.’

The Hall did not meet the reserve at the auction, but at some stage Clayton-le-Moors Urban District Council acquired the grounds to use as the Wilson Playing Fields, etc.
